Come spend a couple of days with me in the classroom! I am offering 2 and 3 day workshops in oil and wax techniques for abstract painting several times throughout the year, in various locations nationwide. See the schedule below to find out when I am in your area, or contact me for information on how to schedule a workshop. (I am now also offering introductory one-day workshops in my own studio near Osseo, WI.)
"Rebecca is a natural when it comes to teaching. In her workshop, one doesn’t feel "being taught" at all, but rather being directed on a step by step journey of discovery - discovery of techniques, of philosophy, of resources, of "self". Unlike many workshops, the journey continues after the event, and, for a very long time in the future, it will have a positive impact on how I approach my work in sculpture, monotype, and clay printing, in addition to painting. Rebecca reaffirmed my belief in the connection between the intuitive process and the intellectual decision-making when creating artwork."
~Barb Chappelle, Ontario, Canada
"Rebecca has a gentle, supportive manner, introducing new techniques, then giving everyone time to practice them. The stillness, when everyone played with these techniques, held some of the richest moments. She's also very thoughtful about the individual, eschewing one-size-fits-all teaching, but also including opportunities to share with and learn from each other. What I gained has broadened my expressive vocabulary, and will integrate more and more with my work as time goes by."--Connie Kleinjans, Redwood City, CA
"Thanks to Rebecca's organizational skills, versatile teaching style, clear and professional demos, interesting powerpoint presentations, and the conversational give and take we had during our hands-on time with the materials, I can honestly say this was the best workshop I have ever attended. Thank you so much!"--Phyllis Lasche, Bay Area, CA
"I found Rebecca Crowell's workshop to be very liberating, in that the idea was not to produce, but to be with the process of exploration. Rebecca showed us many techniques and applications throughout the 2 day workshop, each one building on the preceding one...Rebecca ran the workshop with effortless ease, allowing the participants plenty of time to be in touch with their own creative process...everyone seemed to truly embrace the process-oriented approach without the idea of "right and wrong". It was as if we left our egos at the door. Very refreshing!" - Kathryn Bevier, Rochester Art Supply, Rochester, NY
Oil and Wax: Contemporary Abstract Painting with Cold Wax Medium
During this workshop, participants explore ways to build up abstract oil paintings in layers through the use of cold wax medium, tube paint, pigment sticks and powdered pigments. Students discover new ways to create textures, lines, and color fields, and are encouraged to experiment with a wide variety of tools and techniques. In this approach to painting, the outcome is dependent on the painting process itself, so the class appeals to those who enjoy flexibility and surprises along the way. The techniques are rather advanced, and most suited to people who have had some prior painting experience. Presentations and resources about abstraction are also included to deepen appreciation of abstract content and meaning.
